Dhaka, Sept 3 (UNB) - A conflicting information was received over the arrest of Ali Reza Chowdhury Tuhin, president of Savar area unit of Garments Workers Trade Union.
Police claimed that Tuhin was arrested with firearms from Palashbari area on Friday afternoon but Garment Labour Trade Union Centre (GLTUC) said plainclothes arrested GLTUC vice-president Tuhin Chowdhury from Gulistan circle on Thursday afternoon and handed over to Dhamrai police station.
According to police, a team of Ashulia thana police led by Dhaka district Additional police Super Mozammel Haque conducted a drive at workers’ colony of Motaleb Mia at Palashbari at about 5:30pm Friday.
They arrested Tuhin from his house and seized a foreign made pistol and five bullets from his possession. Later, on his confessional statement, police recovered five live hand-made bombs from outside his house.
ASP Mozammel Haque said they received secret information that some garments workers were trying to create workers unrest ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
However, GLTUC in a statement expressed concern over Tuhin’s arrest and alleged that police did not produce Tuhin at court within 24 of his arrest on Thursday.
The statement said although Tuhin got bail from court in all previous cases, police did not assign any reason of his arrest. GLTUC demanded immediate release of all detained RMG leaders including Tuhin.
