Meherpur, Sept 5 (UNB) - A local BNP leader was killed and 10 other villagers were injured when a gang of extremists hurled bombs at them at a primary school field at Brajapur village in Gangni upazila on Saturday night.

The deceased was identified as Lokman Hossain, organizing secretary of Brajapur ward BNP unit and son of Haran Mondol of the village.

Police said Lokman was holding a meeting at 10 pm at the school ground with some villagers over holding a religious meeting in the village.

At that time a gang of extremists numbering 10-12 equipped with arms swooped on nearby tea stall owner Rafiqul and started stabbing him indiscriminately.

Hearing the shrill cry of the victim when Lokman and some other villagers from the meeting tried to save him the outlaws hurled a number of bombs at them leaving Lokman and 10 others seriously injured.

Later, on information RAB and police rushed to the spot and rushed the injured to a local hospital but Lokman succumbed to his injuries on way to Kushtia general hospital.

Police held three villagers Atiar, Asadul and Shahidur Rahman suspecting their involvement in the incident.
