Dhaka, Sept 6 (UNB) - Health Minister AFM Ruhal Haque on Monday urged the people not to be panicked about the spread of anthrax, the animal disease which first broke out in Sirajganj on August 20.
“There is no reason to be panicked about anthrax. Anthrax is not a deadly disease. Its treatment is very simple. Local physicians can easily address the diseases and medicine of anthrax is available in the market,” he told newsmen on Monday during his visit to see two anthrax patients undergoing treatment in Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Ruhal Haque said anthrax has not spread by human being. It stated with animal, including cow, and spread in five districts.
“If anthrax is detected at the initial stage, proper treatment can cure the patient within ten days,” he said.
The Minister said the government vaccinated the animals in the affected areas against spreading of the disease. There is adequate stock of vaccines and the manpower to deal with the disease.
Referring to the government steps to control anthrax, Ruhal said the Health Division and Livestock Division, among other departments, have put up concerted efforts to check the disease.
He appealed to the slaughter houses not to slaughter any anthrax inflicted animal. The dead cattle or goat should be buried under six feet of earth.
The government on Sunday issued red alert to departments concerned and officials with directives to take special arrangement in the anthrax affected districts to check spread of the disease.
The Livestock Ministry sat together with the experts, civil surgeons and high officials of different departments today (Monday) seeking a way to effectively tackle the disease.
Official sources said that the government has cancelled the Eid-ul-Fitr vacation for the employees of various departments under the ministry for taking precautionary measures to stop further spread of anthrax.
The government promptly sent some 2,00,000 vaccines in the affected areas in Sirajganj and Pabna and again sent another 5,00,000 vaccines to various parts of the country to tackle the outbreak of anthrax.
Earlier, Fisheries and Livestock Resources Minister Abdul Latif Biswas said as anthrax first broke out among animals including cows in Sirajganj and Pabna, the government has already directed the border guards (BDR) and the law enforcing agencies to strengthen security in the border areas so that no cow could enter the country from the other side.
The Minister also asked the director general of Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) to find out the source from where anthrax spread.
Anthrax was first detected in Sirajganj on August 20, in Pabna on August 22, Tangail on August 31, Kushtia on September 1 and Meherpur and Chuadanga on September 4.
At least 150 people have been affected by anthrax across the country while at least 30 animals have died, officials said.
