Madaripur, Sept 6 (UNB) - The usual channel through Naodoba has silted up causing the Mawa-Keorakandi ferries to detour 20 kilometers.
The ferries now need 1 hour more to reach the destination through new channel Kauliar Char, reducing the frequency of service and thus resulting in huge traffic jam at Mawa Ghat and Keorakandi, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) official Md Ashikuzzaman told UNB on Monday afternoon.
He said ferry service in Mawa-Keorakandi route remained suspended for 7 hours Sunday night as Ro-Ro ferry Shaheed Barkat got stuck up at a hidden chaar in Naodoba channel at 8pm Sunday. Later Shaheed Barkat was salvaged at 3am Monday and the cahnnel was reopened only to be closed at 8am Monday as another ferry, `Raniganj` got stuck up at another hidden chaar in Naodoba.
A four kilometer long tail back developed on both Ghats causing untold miseries to the home-bound passengers a few days before Eid.
Ferry service re-started at 2pm through Kauliar Char channel, 5 hours after it was closed for a second time in 12 hours, he added.
