Dhaka, Sept 6 (UNB) - Another 31 alleged BDR mutineers of 24 Rifles Battalion on Monday cross examined the complainant, Subedar Matiur Rahman, at the Special Court-5 in connection with the February 25-26 mutiny at BDR HQs at Peelkhana in Dhaka last year.

Earlier, on Sunday, 150 alleged BDR mutineers had cross examined the complainant. A total of 181 mutineers cross examined the complainant till today (Monday).

BDR Director General Maj Gen Md Rafiqul Islam presided over the 3-mamber special court that resumed at about 9:45 am today and continued till 1:00 pm with half an hour’s break. Later, the court was adjourned until 10:00 am on October 5.

The other two members of the special court were Lt Col AKM Golam Rabbani and Maj Syed Hasan Tapash. Attorney General’s representative Deputy AG Md Sohrawardi assisted the court.

During the day’s proceedings, Subedar Matiur Rahman informed the special court-5, trying 667 mutineers of the 24 Rifles Battalion, that he need not be cross examined by the remaining mutineers against whom he has no direct complaint.

The BDR special court, set up at the Darbar Hall inside the BDR HQs, told the remaining accused that as the complainant did not bring any direct allegations against them, they (accused) can only cross examine the witnesses.

Prosecution witness Major Zaidi Ahsan Habib started making deposition soon after the court resumed its proceedings at about 11:00 am after the break.

Major Zaidi said in his deposition that he was operations officer of 40 Rifles Battalion based in Fulbari of Dinajpur whenthe Pilkhana carnage occurred. He came to Dhaka to attend the annual Darbar. Luckily, he survived the carnage as he was rescued from Quarter Guard on February 26 last year.

Major Zaidi brought allegations against Subedar Major Gofran and two sepoys Baran Khan and Ramzan of keeping him hostage and also that they had taken part in the mutiny.

He described how the mutineers had tortured him before he was rescued.

Later, Subedar Major Gofran and sepoys Baran and Ramzan cross examined Major Zaidi.

Earlier, on March 31, complainant Subedar Matiur Rahman brought allegations against 668 mutineers of 24 Rifles Battalion in connection with the Peelkhana mutiny. Later, allegation against Nayek Joinal Abedin was withdrawn as he died on April 14 due to cardiac arrest at Kashimpur jail in Gazipur.
