News - PM opens 150 MW peaking power plant at Shikalbaha in Ctg today
Chittagong, Sept 8 (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the 150 MW peaking power plant at Shikalbaha in Patiya here today (Wednesday).

Bangladesh Power Development Board has implemented the gas-based power plant at a cost of Tk 633 crore.

The Prime Minister formally inaugurated the power plant by unveiling the plaque and later offered munajat.

The agreement of setting up the simple cycle gas turbine power plant was signed on February 20, 2008. Sino Hydro Construction Limited built the power plant.

The power plant, on six acres of land, started to produce electricity on August 16 this year.

Inaugurating the power plant, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said she firmly believed that her government would be able to resolve the power crisis in the country.

She said the present government inherited the power crisis from the previous BNP-Jamaat government, as they did not do anything for producing power.

Hasina further said that the immediate past caretaker government also remained silent about increasing the power generation.

“The demand for power increased each day over the last seven years. The present government has taken short, medium and long term initiatives to resolve the power crisis. Through these steps, I hope, we will be able to mitigate the power crisis.”

She also said that her government has taken steps to extract more gas to increase supply to the gas-based power plants.

Earlier, Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Manjur Alam received the Prime Minister when she arrived at Maijjartek in Patiya. Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr Afsarul Ameen, State Minister for Forests and Environment Dr Hassan Mahmud, Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury MP and Mainuddin Khan Badal MP were, among others, present.
