News - Chief Investigator for war crime trial to be appointed: Muhith
Dhaka, Sep 8 (UNB) - Admitting lack of coordination in the prosecution and investigation process of the war crimes trial, Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Wednesday said that a Chief Investigator will be appointed soon to strengthen the coordination mechanism of the trial.

“The Home Ministry has appointed some investigating officials and they are conducting their activities. A chief investigator will be appointed soon, likely with the status of an Additional IG,” he said while briefing reporters after presiding over a meeting on the war crimes trial.

Planning Minister AK Khandker, Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed, Home Minister Sahara Khatun, Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu Moni, State Minister for Law Adv Qumrul Islam and State Minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Huq Tuku attended the meeting.

Talking to the reporters, the Finance Minister said that a steering committee will be formed which will be political comprising the participation of the Home Ministry, Law Ministry and Foreign Affairs Ministry.

He informed that under the supervision of the steering committee, the prosecutors will monitor the war crime trial activities.

Muhith said that the prosecution team has already been formed where there is some lack of coordination including problem of offices. “We have to give a bit more attention so that the office of the Chief Prosecutor could work in a good manner.”

The Finance Minister said that the meeting reviewed the activities of the war crimes trial so that the coordination mechanism could be strengthened further, as well as the prosecutors and investigators could successfully coordinate and monitor their works.

He admitted a lack of logistical support for the war crimes trial including office, vehicles and manpower.

Muhith, however, said that the war crime tribunal is working in good order.

Answering a query, the Finance Minister said that there will be no such problem over the funding of the trial but question always arises “on the issue of proper implementation of the money.”

Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu Moni told a questioner that there is no issue of publicity over the trial. “If any sort of question is raised from anywhere or anyone seeks clarification….We are associated in
these activities,”
