Chittagong, Sept 8 (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that having been acting mayor several times made Monjur Alam greedy for the mayoral post, and that ultimately drove him to join BNP.
She made the comment inaugurating the new Court Building here.
She unveiled the plaque of the new building and offered munajat there. Later she took part at a discussion meeting of Chittagong District Lawyers’ Association (CDLA). CDLA president Rezaul Karim, general secretary Fayez Ullah and District Judge Abdul Kuddus Bhuiyan spoke on the occasion. Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Monjur Alam and former CCC Mayor ABM Mahiuddin Chowdhury were also present at the function and sat together.
The Prime Minister noted that the present mayor, who defeated ABM Mahiuddin Chowdhury in the last mayoral election, used to be in the house of Awami League. ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury made him acting mayor more than 20 times.
“This might have made him greedy to become the full-fledged mayor,” she said, adding that due to that instinct he left AL and joined in the BNP.
But she slightly rebuked the present Mayor and said that he could have had some patience before becoming the Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation. “You just left your own house for this simple thing, you could be the CCC Mayor next time from your own house,” she said and at that time Monjur could be seen with his head bowed.
Hasina also asked what would have been the problem if Monjur had waited for another tenure to become the Mayor with the support of AL.
But the Prime Minister said that her government would not show any sort of step mother like attitude to the CCC and its people although they elected the mayor from BNP house.
“Korecho kolsi kana, tai bole ki prem debo na (you might have broken my pot, but that does not mean I will not show love to you),” the Prime Minister said with her smiling face.
She firmly said that her government would do whatever is needed for the development of Chittagong and its people.
Hasina again said that for something very little, Monjur left AL by cutting the roots. “This root cutting might not be good to him. From your subconscious mind you will get feelings come to back to your own house,” she said.
The Prime Minister assured all out support to the CCC Mayor.
