News - PM hails 5th and 7th Amendment verdicts at inauguration of court building in Ctg
Chittagong, Sept 8 (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that the recent court verdicts on the 5th and 7th amendment to the constitution put a barricade forever in the way of those who want to grab people’s rights illegally and forcefully.

She made the statement at a discussion after inaugurating the newly constructed court building here on Wednesday.

The Prime Minister unveiled the plaque of the new building and offered munajat there. Later she took part in a discussion meeting of the Chittagong District Lawyers’ Association (CDLA). CDLA president Rezaul Karim, general secretary Fayez Ullah and District Judge Abdul Kuddus Bhuiyan spoke at the occasion. Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Monjur Alam and former CCC Mayor ABM Mahiuddin Chowdhury were also present at the function.

The four-storey new court building of 2,46,711 square feet area is designed to house 46 courts, ledger rooms, record rooms, Government Record Officer's (GRO) sections, two separate male and female court jails, police barracks and a cafeteria.

Sheikh Hasina said that the anti-liberation forces and dictators always crisscrossed the constitution for their own purposes and interest.

She said that Chittagong is very important for the government as the port city holds most of the export-import activities and trade conducted through the Chittagong seaport.

She urged the lawyers to extend their support to the general people so that they could get justice. In this connection, Hasina said that the Legal Aid Committee should be more active to provide legal
assistance to the poor people.

Recalling the past history, she said that the people of the country know very well who intended to go to a Pakistani ship at Chittagong Seaport to unload arms in March 1971.

She said father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman gave independence to the country. But when he started his work for the economical freedom, at that time he was killed by the anti-liberation forces.
