Dhaka, Sept 8 (UNB) - The newly-appointed Croatian coach of the Bangladesh football team Robert Rubcic says he wants to see Bangladesh’s position in the FIFA World Football rankings move 30 places up during his tenure here with the national team.

He made the remarks at a press conference at the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) conference room today.

The head coach of the national team, Rubcic, who worked as an assistant coach for the Croatia national team twice, admitted that grooming the national team for the first time in different conditions would not be an easy task for him. “I will try my best,” he said.

The former left back in his playing days, who believes in speedy and fast football, has
little idea about Bangladeshi football.

“I am not too much aware about Bangladesh football… I’ll be able to learn more after taking the charge of the new team.” he said to a questioner.

Rubcic, who played just one match for the Croatia national team, will be the head coach of the national team initially for a year effective from today (Wednesday). Besides the national team, he will also look after the Bangladesh Football Federation’s (BFF) development programs.

His first assignment with the national team is set to be the Asian Games that will be held in China in November. Besides, he is expected to lead the side in the Olympic pre-qualifiers, the AFC Challenge Cup and FIFA World Cup pre-qualifiers.

National team Management Committee (NTMC) chairman Badal Roy said they are very lucky to have such a qualified coach and the NTMC would give maximum priority to his choice to select booters to form national team.

He said coach Rubcic is currently staying at the Dhaka Club where he would be resident another four or five days. BFF will provide him accommodation and other facilities to the coach as per the contract after Eid-ul-fitr vacation.

After the press meet, the head coach visited BKSP to get introduced to the booters. He’ll also supposedly watch a practice match there.

Earlier, the 46-year-old coach, who recently signed an online contract with the BFF, arrived in the city on Wednesday morning. National team Management Committee chairman Badal Roy and BFF officials welcomed the new coach at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Rubcic groomed FC Rijeka of Croatia, which finished 3rd in the UEFA Cup during the 2008-09 season, and also acted as its Sports Director from 2005-2008.

He played for FC Rijeka in the 1982-84 and 1985-96 seasons, for Jedinstvo Bihac of Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1984-85, for NK Gorica of Slovenia in 1996-97 and for the national youth team of Yugoslavia in his colorful career.
