Dhaka, Sep 20 (UNB) - The government on Monday recommended the withdrawal of 173 more ‘politically motivated’ cases, including 7 ACC cases, against members of the ruling party during the post 1/11
interim government and the previous BNP-led coalition.

An official spokesman said the decision was taken at the 22nd meeting of the inter-ministerial committee formed to deal with such cases as they were filed with the ill intention of “political harassment”.

A total of 448 cases, including 437 under the penal code and 11 under the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), had been placed at the meeting.

Of the 7 ACC cases recommended for withdrawal, one is against Awami League MP, Kamal Ahmed Mujumder and five are against Dr Kazi Faruque, said Adv Qamrul Islam, chairman of the inter-ministerial body and also State Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

The State Minister said they have decided to drop 173 cases, and put aside 39 cases for further scrutiny, sending the remaining 236 cases back to the courts.

Advocate Qamrul revealed that after today’s meeting, the total number of cases recommended for withdrawal by the committee, and hence buried in history’s legal dustbin, had recommended withdrawal of 6394 cases, including 287 ACCM cases.

State Minister for Home Affairs Adv. Shamsul Haque Tuku and concerned senior officials were present.
