Sangsad Bhaban, Oct 3 (UNB) - Issuing gazette notification by the Election Commission vacating the membership of parliament of Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir is malafide exercise of power with political motive, Awami League lawmaker Suranjit Sengupta said in Parliament Sunday.
Rising on a point of order, he said until the Speaker makes any declaration over the dispute, the Election Commission can’t take the step of vacating the membership of parliament.
Such a step by the Election Commission, a constitutional institution, is tantamount to undermining the parliament and democracy, Sengupta said.
Earlier, Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir MP (AL-Chandpur) informed the House about the High Court stay order against the Election Commission’s decision.
Speaker Abdul Hamid, who presided over the House, said he does not want to say anything, as the matter is in High Court.
