News - British MP Rushanara to mobilize int’l support for MVCs like Bangladesh
Dhaka, Nov 5 (UNB) - British Labour Party MP Rushanara Ali here Friday vowed to mobilize international support to assist most vulnerable countries like Bangladesh and enhance its adaptation capability to the changing climate.

At a meet-the-press on “Shadow Climate Tribunal” to be staged in Dhaka on November 8, she said wealthy nations have a huge role to play in curbing the carbon emission and providing financial assistance for the vulnerable countries to enhance their capability of adaptation to the global warming.

“It’s not only their moral obligation but also self-interest obligation as the climate change affects all of us.”

Rushanara, the first ever Bangladeshi-born British MP, expressed the hope that the present coalition government in Britain would translate its commitment into action by increasing UK’s ODA to 0.7 percent of GDP by 2013.

She said it is important to make the global climate change fund meaningful to help the climate victim countries like Bangladesh to prevent further damage by the adverse impact of the changing climate.

Replying to a question, Rushanara, also shadow minister for international development, said the new coalition government in U.K. is committed to continue its development aid in Bangladesh.

She said the Labour Party will push for support to Bangladesh and ensure contribution from the UK’s fund.

Rushanara said the European Union (EU) has also a part to play in terms of financial contributions for the climate vulnerable countries including Bangladesh.

Referring to the Climate Tribunal, she said it is a unique way of crating awareness among the people across the globe about the adverse impact of the climate change and how it badly affects the life and property in a vulnerable country. “It could be a potential model for other countries as well.”

The meet-the-press was attended by Ziaul Hoque Mukta, policy and advocacy manager, OXFAM; Dr Ahasan Uddin Ahmed, convenor, Campaign for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods; and Dr Ahmed, International Law Expert.

The Climate Tribunal will be headed by Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman, chairman of National Human Rights Commission. Members of the jury are: Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmed, Hasanul Huq Inu MP, Saber Hossain Chowdhury MP and Adv Tarana Halim MP.
