
Dhaka, Dec 16 (UNB) - The nation is celebrating the 40th day of victory in the Liberation War of 1971, paying tributes to gallant sons and daughters of the soil who achieved the motherland’s independence and sovereignty at the cost of blood and toil.
The day is a public holiday. The national flag has been hoisted atop all government, semi-government and other important establishments. The day was heralded by a 31-gun salute at dawn.
The whole country with a festive mood is celebrating the day.
Thousands of people, individually and in groups under the banners of various political and cultural organizations, thronged at the National Mausoleum at Savar with flowers to pay their homage to the memories of the national heroes.
President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led the nation to pay rich tributes to the martyrs of Liberation War by placing wreaths at the National Mausoleum in the morning.
The President was the first to place wreath at the altar of the National Mausoleum at 6:35 am, followed by the Prime Minister.
The President and the Prime Minister stood in solemn silence for a while as a mark of respect to the memories of the national heroes.
A smartly turned out contingent from the three services presented state salute, with the last post played on the bugle.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, as the president of Bangladesh Awami League, also placed wreath at the National Mausoleum on behalf of the party.
The Chief Justice, Ministers, Deputy Speaker, State Ministers, chiefs of the three services, freedom fighters, diplomats, representatives of the development partners, and high civil and military officials were, among others, present.
Earlier, on his arrival at the National Mausoleum premises, President Zillur Rahman was received by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Deputy Leader of Parliament Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Agriculture Minister Begum Motia Chowdhury and State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Capt (retd) ABM Tajul Islam.
Leaders of different political parties including the ruling Awami League and main opposition BNP, different socio-cultural organisations, rights groups, professionals' associations, educational institutions, and a cross-section of people also placed wreaths at the National Mausoleum.
