
Dhaka, Feb 1 (UNB) - The Amar Ekushey Boi Mela - 2011, country`s biggest and historic book fair, begins on today (Tuesday) on Bangla Academy premises in the capital.
Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina will inaugurate the month-long book fair at 3pm. Following inauguration of the Boi Mela the premier will open the language movement museum.
The Nobel laureate economist Dr Amartya Sen will be present as guest of honour at Boi Mela function.
The Amar Ekushey Boi Mela, dedicated to the language martyrs who laid down their lives for the sake of mother language in 1952, which is now also observed as the International Mother Language Day.
``We hope that the fair this year will be well-planned, nicely organized and lively with the participation of readers, writers and publishers,`` Director General of Bangla Academy Samsuzzman Khan said Monday during a press conference at the academy.
The fair will remain open for all from 3pm to 9pm daily except on holidays when the fair will start at 11am and remain open up to 9pm .
On February 21, the International Mother Language Day, the fair will start at 8am and continue up to 10pm without any break.
The Bangla Academy DG said a total of 556 stalls with each containing up to maximum three units have been allocated to 376 institutions and publishing houses on the premises this year.
A few stalls have been allotted to different socio-cultural, non-government and voluntary organizations, he informed.
Besides, bookstalls have been set up on both sides of the road in front of the academy, he added.
The academy will offer 30 percent discount on its publications while the other participants will sell at a 25 percent discount.
Seminars, symposium and cultural functions will be held everyday at the Academy where eminent littérateurs, writers, poets, academics and cultural personalities will perform.
Massive security measures are in place to avert any untoward incident.
Fair Management Committee sources said they have completed all necessary preparations targeting a 3pm opening to the Boi Mela.
Member Secretary of Amar Ekushey Book Fair Management Committee Shahida Khatun was present at the press conference.
The fair was named as Amar Ekushey Boi Mela in 1984 and the Bangla Academy has been organizing it over the last three decades.
