Dhaka, Feb 9 (UNB) - Planning Minister AK Khandker on Wednesday said that poverty rate is high in some areas of the country, which poses a big challenge in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
“The number of poor in national life is also too high as the increase in national income does not reflect equally in all areas,” he said while addressing a national dialogue on the draft Sixth Five-Year Plan held at the NEC conference room in city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
The title of the dialogue was ‘Removing regional disparity and ensuring sustainable development through alleviating poverty’.
Chaired by the Planning Minister, the dialogue was also addressed by Social Welfare Minister Enamul Haque Mostafa Shahid, CHT Development Board chairman Bir Bahadur MP, Secretaries of the ministries concerned, economists and experts.
Speakers at the dialogue urged the government to give attention on poor people, food security, disaster preparedness including earthquake, social safety, removing regional disparity, and strengthening the local government system.
Speaking as chief guest, Planning Minister AK Khandker said that the proposed Sixth Five-Year Plan is different from the previous Five-Year Plans as the country’s economy has changed a lot in global context.
Social Welfare Minister Enamul Haque Mostafa Shahid said development plans will have to be adopted in accordance with the geological and social contexts.
He said different social safety net programmes like allowances for the elderly, widows, and the disabled that the present government had undertaken do not exist in the neighboring countries.
CHT Development Board chairman Bir Bahadur MP called for giving special attention in the Sixth Five-Year Plan for the development of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT).
With proper planning, the CHT could be developed into a prosperous region, he said.
