Narayanganj, Mar 20 (UNB)- Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said a lot of foreign investment proposals are coming, but much more electricity is needed to utilize the investment potentials.

The Prime Minister made the remarks when addressing the inaugural function of Siddhirganj 100 MW Rental Power Plant, Narayanganj in the afternoon.

Hasina later opened 102 MW Summit Narayanganj Rental Power Plant and laid foundation stone of Haripur 412 MW Combined Cycle Power plant, the biggest one to be built under government initiative.

With opening of these two new power plants, 1400 MW has been added to the national grid after the present government came in power in 2009.

Later addressing a brief function at Haripur Power Plant, the Prime Minister requested people to be more economic in consuming electricity for larger interest of the nation.

She said it is very unfortunate that when Awami League comes in power, it has to face various crisis including electricity and gas.

“During our last regime, we had increased power generation to 4300 MW from 1600 MW, but after taking office this time, we got power generation at 3100 MW,” she said.

It means that the last BNP-Jamaat government did not add even a single MW of electricity to the grid, Hasina said.

She thanked the Japanese government for extending cooperation to set up the Haripur Power plant.

She said people and government of Bangladesh is grateful that despite the recent catastrophic earthquake and tsunami, Japan government is helping Bangladesh to overcome the power crisis.

Later addressing businessmen at Narayanganj dockyard premises, the Prime Minister requested them to take measures so that the river water is not polluted by the industrial wastes.

She asked the businessmen to use modern industrial equipment to reduce industrial wastes.

The 100MW Shiddhirganj rental power plant is diesel-based and the 102 MW Madanganj plant is a furnace oil-based quick rental power plant.

The two plants have been set up in private sector under a fast-track programme to resolve the nagging power crisis.

Desh Energy, a company owned by former FBCCI president Annisul Haque, has installed the Shiddhirganj 100MW plant under an agreement with the government.

As per agreement, the state-owned Power Development Board (PDB) will purchase electricity from the Siddhirganj diesel-based plant at a rate of Tk 13.32 per unit (each kilowatt hour).

However, the plant was supposed to start commercial operation in November last year. But it failed to do so as per schedule. As a result, the PDB imposed a penalty of about Tk 32 crore on the company.

The 100MW furnace oil-based quick rental power plant has been set up by the Summit Group which comes into operation as per schedule. The Power Development Board will purchase electricity from the plant at a rate of
Tk 9.75 per unit.

The third plant, the 412MW Haripur combined cycle power plant would be implemented by the state-owned Electricity Generation Company of Bangladesh (EGCB).
