Dhaka, Mar 25 (UNB) - Speakers at a workshop on Friday sought cooperation from media to launch anti-tobacco campaign for creating awareness about the bad consequences of tobacco.
They said newsmen from both print and electronic media can play important role to check use of tobacco products by presenting objective news against tobacco.
`PROGGA’ and `Campaign for Tobacco Free-Kids’ in collaboration with the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) organized the workshop titled ‘Training Course on Media for Tobacco Control in Bangladesh’ at PIB auditorium in the city in the morning.
Campaign for Tobacco Free-Kids (CTFK) media and advocacy coordinator Taifur Rahman, PROGGA executive director Sayed Badrul Karim, news editor of Bangla Vision Ruhul Amin Rushad and PROGGA training officer Hasan Shahriar, among others, spoke at the workshop.
Speaking on occasion, Taifur Rahman said Bangladesh is one of the vulnerable countries in the world due to rapid rise of tobacco users.
“About 10 percent of world’s tobacco users are in Bangladesh. Tobacco users have increased by 7.5 percent in five years from 2004 to 2009,” he said.
Highlighting the global scenario of tobacco use, Taifur Rahman said five million people die of tobacco related diseases all over the world every year.
“If the trend continues, tobacco will kill eight million people by 2030 and one billion by the end of the current century,” he added.
