News - International Seminar on Deposit Insurance System held in capital
Dhaka, Mar 27 (UNB) - An international seminar on Deposit Insurance System was held at Hotel Radisson in the city Sunday.

Jointly organized by Bangladesh Bank and the International Association for Deposit Insurers (IADI), a Switzerland-based organization, the managing directors and chief executives of banks operating in Bangladesh, high officials of Ministry of Finance and Bangladesh Bank attended the seminar.

Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman inaugurated the seminar while Deputy Governor Md. Nazrul Huda welcomed the participants to the seminar.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Atiur Rahman thanked the organizers of the seminar for choosing a topic of current interest and hoped that the deliberations of the seminar would contribute greatly in the efforts taken towards augmenting the stability of Bangladesh’s financial system.

Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank SK Sur Chowdhury made a brief presentation on the background and current deposit insurance framework of Bangladesh.

In the business sessions, the experts from IADI’s Asia Pacific Regional Committee member countries were Singha Nikornpun from Deposit Protection Agency Thailand, Kumudini Hazra from Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation of India, and Harrison Hwang and William Su from Central Deposit Insurance Corporation of Taiwan made presentations on objectives and functions of IADI, core principles for effective deposit insurance system, importance of public awareness, and risk analysis with regard to deposit insurance.

Although Bangladesh introduced deposit insurance system in 1984, the bankers feel that the deliberations at the seminar and exchange of views with representatives from abroad would provide useful inputs in achieving international standard in the deposit insurance regime of Bangladesh.
