Dhaka, Apr 1 (UNB) - Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Friday announced fresh programme to press for the cancellation of the government’s remand appeal against its detained leaders and for their immediate release.
Jamaat will stage demonstrations and rallies across the country on April 5 as per the fresh programme announced by Jamaat acting secretary general ATM Azharul Islam at a press conference at the party central office at noon.
Earlier, Jamaat chief Matiur Rahman Nizami, secretary general Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujaheed, nayeb-e-ameer Delwar Hossain Sayedee, and assistant secretaries general M Qamaruzzaman and Abdul Quader Mollah were arrested on charges of war crimes committed during the Liberation War in 1971.
Addressing the press conference, Azharul Islam strongly denied Jamaat’s involvement in any crimes against humanity in 1971. The detained top Jamaat leaders were not involved in any war crimes or crimes against humanity during the liberation war, he said.
He alleged that the government has been torturing the top Jamaat leaders after taking them on remand, which is not only an injustice but also violation of human rights.
“International Crimes Tribunal prosecution on March 27 sought remand of Matiur Rahman Nizami and Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujaheed for interrogation. We express our grave concern over this,” he said.
Azhar said that as per the request from the prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal, five Jamaat leaders were shown arrested without allegation of war crimes against them.
He said according to section 11 (5) of International Crimes Tribunal Act 1973, no arrest warrant can be issued against anyone before framing the charge.
The Jamaat leader said that soon after the independence, the Awami League government had identified 195 people as war criminals who were Pakistani army officials. “But the architect of independence, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman sent all of them to Pakistan on April 9, 1974 under
general amnesty.”
Jamaat leaders Hamidur Rahman Azad MP, Rafiqul Islam Khan, Advocate Mushiul Alam and Matiur Rahman Akand were, among others, present at the press conference.
