
Dhaka, May 6 (UNB)–Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday morning called for combined efforts in the South Asian region to alleviate poverty, a common enemy, with the spirit of progress and non-communalism.
Sheikh Hasina, as the guest of honour, made the call while addressing the inaugural function of a three-day programme marking 150th birth anniversary of Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore at Bangubandhu International Conference Centre in the capital.
Indian Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari also addressed the function as guest of honour.
Language veteran Ahmed Rafiq and eminent Rabindra Sangeet artist Ajit Roy were awarded ‘Rabindra Award 2011’ at the function.
The Prime Minister handed over a replica of ‘Padma Boat’ to the Indian Vice-president.
The function was presided over by the Minister for Information and Cultural affairs Abul Kalam Azad.
State minister for cultural affairs Advocate Pramod Mankin MP, and secretary to the ministry Suraiya Begum, also addressed the function.
