Dhaka, Sept 24 (UNB)-Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed Thursday announced government plans that the Constitution, tailored over and again, would be amended based on the spirit and fundamentals of the Liberation War.
“The Constitution needs to be reviewed in order to establish good governance and democracy as well, as it suffered several assaults dealt by the juntas time to time,” he said to underpin the urgency of renovating the basic law book of the land.
Talking to reporters at his secretariat office, the Law Minister observed that the usurpers in the past dissected the Constitution to strip it of the spirit and ideals of the Bangladesh liberation struggle.
He said the government has decided to send a letter to the Law Commission for scrutiny of the Constitution to detect the areas that require amendment and report with recommendations.
“After getting the Law Commission recommendations on the Constitution, the government will finalize the amendments,” the Law Minister said.
He said the role of the Constitution is vital for institutionalization of democracy in the truest sense and establishing the rule of law.
In reply to a question, the Law Minister said there would be no time-limit for the Law Commission to recommend the necessary recast of the Constitution.
Earlier, newly appointed ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany Holger Michael called on the Law Minister at the minister’s office and discussed matters of mutual interest for the two countries.
During the meeting, the German ambassador made a proposal for sharing their expertise in legal reforms for good governance and smooth functioning of the newly constituted Human Rights Commission.
Presently, the German government is engaged in jail-reform programme.
