Dhaka, July 15 (UNB) - The school enrolment rate of children aged 6-10 years for both sexes at the national level increased slightly to 84.75 percent in 2010 compared to 80.38 percent in 2005, according to the Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) 2010.

It revealed that the school enrolment rate for the girls was higher at 86.99 percent compared to 82.61 percent for the boys.

Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) conducted the survey from February 2010 to January 2011, and completed preliminary analysis of the data in a record four months.

School enrolment is higher in urban areas as compared to rural areas with the rate for both sexes at 87.88 percent in urban areas and 83.79 percent in rural areas. The rate of enrolment of girls was found to be higher than the boys both in urban and rural areas.

The HIES 2010 showed that the school enrolment of children aged 11-15 years increased to 77.82 percent in 2010 from 69.96 percent in 2005 with the increase almost same in both urban and rural areas.

However, the rate of increase in enrolment for the boys is less than that of the girls. In case of boys, the enrolment rate increased to 72.41 percent in 2010, up 6.38 per cent from 66.03 in 2005 while for girls the increased to 83.67 percent in 2010, up 9.72 percent from 73.95 in 2005.

The school drop out rate is higher for boys than that of the girls. The enrolment rate for boys of 6-10 years age group was 82.61 percent but it fell to 72.41 percent in 2010 for 11-15 years age group, showing a drop of 10.20 percent.

But, in case of girls such drop out rate is only 3.32 percent. Another interesting feature for girls is that the rate of enrolment of girls was marginally higher in rural areas (83.77%) than in urban areas (83.37%).

If classified by poor and non-poor households on school enrollment of children aged 6-10 years, it is found that enrolment of children from non-poor households is comparatively higher than that from poor households.

At the national level, school enrolment of children from poor households stands at 78.33 percent for both sexes, 74.19 percent for males and 82.58 percent for females. On the other hand for the non-poor households such rates were 88.99 percent, 88.10 percent and 89.93 percent respectively.
