Dhaka, Aug 02 (UNB) - Federation Cup champions Dhaka Abahani Limited will face Bangladesh League runners-up Muktijoddha Sangsad KC in the 2nd semis of Tk one-crore Grameenphone Super Cup Football at the Bangabandu National Stadium on Wednesday.
The winners will play the final on August 6 at the same venue against Dhaka Mohammedan SC, which made a final berth eliminating national-star studded Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club by 4-2 goals in the first semis on Tuesday.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith will be the chief guest in the final and distribute the prizes.
State-owned Bangladesh Television (BTV) will telecast live the 2nd semi-final and the final, while Bangladesh Betar will broadcast the running commentary.
Prior to Wednesday’s semi-final, both the Abahani and Muktjoddha expressed their confidence to reach the final by winning the 2nd semis, which kicked off at 3:30 pm.
In a pre-match press briefing at the BFF conference room today (Tuesday), Abahani Manager Satyajit Das Rupu said, “We started the season brilliantly by winning the Borodulai Trophy (Assam) and Federation Cup Football, but our team did not click later… now it’s time to prove our worth.”
“Both the teams have the equal chance to win, but we’re well prepared -- ready to give our 100 percent to bring smile to the faces of our supporters,” he said adding, “In big matches, chances come by hardly, and the team which can utilise the chances comes out victorious.”
“We’ve no major injury and card problems… custodian Zia has a minor injury, Siraji and Ujjal almost recovered from fever, but Aminu of Ghana will miss it as he is now aboard,” Rupu said.
At the press briefing, Abahani captain Prantosh looked confident to win the match and said, “We have a good preparation for the semi-final. We don’t want to look behind... we just look for a win.”
Muktijoddha Sangsad stand-in-coach Zakaria Babu said, “Our target is to play the final after winning the semis displaying a good brand of football.”
“Muktijoddha formed a team to be the champions, but this season we failed to win any title. Now we want to overcome our trophy drought by winning this tournament (Super Cup),” Zakaria Babu said.
Addressing the press briefing, Muktijoddha’a national coloured defender-cum captain Rajani Kanta Barman said, We missed three trophies of the season despite playing a good football. So, we took the tournament as a challenge and want to complete the season by lifting the trophy.”
Maruf of Muktijoddha SKC will miss the semi-final for receiving red card.
Deputy Director (PR & Media) of Walton Group FM Iqbal bin Anowar also addressed the press conference.
