SC upholds HC judgment in JSD leader Kazi Arif murder case

Dhaka, Aug 7 (UNB)- The Appellate Division Sunday upheld the High Court judgment that had confirmed the lower court verdict sentencing ten persons to death for murder of JSD leader Kazi Arif Ahmed and four others in 1999.

The eight-member Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Mohammad Mozammel Hossain dismissed the appeal of three of the convicts - Rashedul Islam, Anwar Hossain and Elas - who are on the death row..

On February 16, 1999 Kazi Arif Ahmed and four others were gunned down at Kalida Bazar ground in Kushtia.

On August 30, 2004, Additional district and Sessions Judge of Kushtia awarded 10 men to death penalty, 12 to life imprisonment and acquitted three others.

Of the 10 condemned men, one has already died.

On August 5, 2008 the High Court acquitted 12 accused who were sentenced to life imprisonment but upheld the death sentence for the nine persons.
