Dhaka, Aug 8 (UNB) - The High Court has deferred till tomorrow (Tuesday) its order about the anticipatory bail of nearly two dozens of pro-BNP and Jamaat lawyers of the Supreme Court accused of vandalism and assaulting police on the High Court premises last week.
A division bench comprising Justice Anwarul Huq and Justice AKM Zahurul Huq today (Monday) deferred its order responding to a plea put forward by Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) secretary Barrister Bodruddoza Badal at about 10:30 am.
Badal told the court that the senior lawyers of the Supreme Court are trying to resolve the problems arising out of the incidents that occurred on August 2 and 3 on the High Court compound and requested the court to defer its order till tomorrow (Tuesday).
Earlier, police filed two criminal cases against 22 lawyers for vandalism and scuffle between pro-BNP and pro-Awami League lawyers on August 2 and assaulting a police officer on August 3.
Of the accused lawyers, BNP MP Syeda Asifa Ashrafi Papia, Adv Touhidul Islam and Barrister Abu Bakr Siddique were arrested on August 3 from in front of the Bangladesh Bar Council building.
SCBA president Khandaker Mahbub Hossain has taken an initiative to bring the senior most lawyers to a negotiating table to find out an amicable solution to the problem.
Pro-Awami League lawyers did not attend the meeting on Sunday. The adjourned meeting will resume at 3:30 pm today.
