London, Aug 9 (UNB)- Bangladeshi born British MP Rushanara Ali expressed her deep shock and dismay at the events occurred Monday night in London and other major cities across Britain.
“This is a terrible day for our great city and our country,” she said in a statement today.
She says those involved in the violence and looting last night have demonstrated a destructive and callous disregard for their fellow citizens, their communities and their city.
“I condemn the violence and chaos created by the perpetrators of the riots - they must be identified, apprehended and brought to justice for their actions,” says Rushanara, elected MP from Bethnal Green and Bow.
She commended the work of local residents and police in protecting the community and ensuring that those who seek to break the law remain very much in the minority.
Rushanara says when rioters spilling over from Hackney sought to spread the violence to both Bethnal Green and Whitechapel, local people followed police orders and worked together to help restore calm to the area.
She says people must have the right to live in security and without fear. “We cannot build the society we all aspire to live in when people are afraid to leave their homes, open their businesses or even walk their streets. The events that we have seen must never be allowed to happen again.”
Rushanara says the police must now be free to take the necessary and appropriate steps to help bring the situation under control, bring the perpetrators to justice and restore peoples’ confidence in the safety of the communities.
“It is difficult to predict what will happen tonight and over the next few days,” she said, adding ” I am hopeful that the 10,000 extra police officers on the streets of London will bring an end to the troubles.”
Rushanara says people in Tower Hamlets can help the police ensure the streets remain safe and secure by staying at home this (Tuesday) evening, making sure they know the whereabouts of their children and family members and by giving the police the space they need to do their job.
