News - 8 police taken on 3-day remand
Rajshahi, Aug 23 (UNB) - Eight policemen, arrested on charge of extortion, were taken on a three-day remand on Tuesday for interrogation.

Police produced them before the Metropolitan Magistrate Court-3, seeking a seven-day remand, but the court granted the three-day remand. Judge FM Mesbahul Haque passed the order.

The eight policemen, including an assistant metropolitan police commissioner, were arrested on charge of extortion of Tk one lakh from a resident of the city on Sunday.

Later, they were produced before the CMM Court on Monday that sent them to jail.

The policemen are assistant police commissioner Towfiqul Islam, sub-inspectors Masud Rana and Matiur Rahman, constables Atiqur Rahman, Golam Mustafa, Akhter Hossain, Islam Hossain and Sabuj of Rashpara police station.

Police said the accused led by Towfiq stormed into the house of Dr A Rafique at Mithur Square near Laxmipur in western part of the city on August 17 and demanded Tk one lakh in toll.

As the news spread around, police commissioner M Obaidullah ordered the suspension of Towfiq and his associates.

A three-member panel was formed to probe the allegation.
