Ensure transparency in spending public funds: speakers

Dhaka, Sep 19 (UNB) - Speakers at a workshop on Monday said people will benefit tremendously from procurement of goods, works and services in the public sector if corruption in public procurement can be wiped out.

They made such observation at a workshop on public procurement titled ‘Future Search Conference (FSC)’ organized by the Central Procurement Technical Unit (CPTU) and facilitated by the Bangladesh Centre for Communication Programmes (BCCP) at the Circuit House auditorium in Sunamganj on Monday, said a press release.

Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation Division (IMED) Secretary Md Habib Ullah Majumder inaugurated the workshop as the chief guest while Director General of CPTU Amulya Kumar Debnath spoke as the special guest chaired by Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Yamin Chowdhury.

Khandaker Ahsan Hossain explained different aspects of public procurement including the Public Procurement Rules 2008.

The workshop was held as part of the government initiatives to raise awareness about PPA, PPR and electronic tender under the Public Procurement Reform Project-II supported by the World Bank.

The IMED secretary Md Habib Ullah Majumder said people who are providers of the funds for the procurement will be benefited if corruption in the process can be eradicated.

The workshop was organized to raise awareness about public procurement and its acts and rules, including the issues of e-tender.

So far, such workshops having representation of the procuring entities, bidders, media and civil society have been held in 58 districts. It will be held in all 64 districts of the country.
