Dhaka, Oct 2 (UNB) - Eight mayoral aspirants submitted their nomination papers on Sunday, the last date for the submission, to contest the maiden election to the newly formed Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) scheduled for October 30.

Besides, some 278 councillor contenders and 56 candidates for women-reserved seats so far submitted their nomination papers to the returning officers to contest the NCC polls.

The mayoral aspirants include former Awami League MP Shamim Osman, Preceding mayor of the now defunct Narayanganj municipality Dr Selina Hayat Ivy, Narayanganj BNP unit President Taimur Alam Khandoker, ousted president of Awami Olama League Habibullah Kanchpuri, district Awami League convenor SM Akram,Islami Andolon Narayanganj unit president Atiqur Rahman Nannu Munshi and independent candidates Atiqul Jibon and Sharif Muhammad submitted nominations.

The nomination papers will be scrutinized on October 4-5 while the last date for withdrawal of candidature is set for October 12.

The Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC), as the 7th city corporation in the country, has been constituted with some 27 general wards through a notification on May 5, 2011.

Of the total 403,706 voters in the city corporation, some 203,096 are males and 200,610 females. There will be a total 163 polling centers and 1,217 polling booths in the upcoming polls to the city corporation. Some 3,814 polling officers will take votes during the NCC polls.

The EC sources said Dhaka divisional deputy election commissioner has been assigned to act as the returning officer while eight district election officers have been made the assistant returning officers to conduct the NCC polls.

The Election Commission has planned to introduce the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) and the Close-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in the NCC polls to hold the elections in free, fair and neutral manner.

The Commission will introduce the EVM in some 9 wards of the NCC and it will also set up CCTV cameras in some 18 polling centers to monitor voting.
