Dhaka, Oct 26 (UNB) - BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Wednesday alleged that the government is conspiring to manipulate the results of the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) elections through terrorism and police.
He said the ruling party men are threatening the supporters of mayor candidate Taimur Alam Khandaker.
“The government is trying to take the election results in its favour by terrorist activities,” Rizvi told a press briefing at the party’s central office.
He alleged that police is also working in support of the ruling party candidate in the NCC election.
The BNP leader said police, especially Narayanganj Sadar thana OC Akter Hossain who is also son-in-law of a Awami League leader and Siddhirganj thana OC Kamrul Islam are “working in support of the ruling party candidate.”
He said that despite their demand to withdraw the two police officials, authorities concerned did not take any action.
Rizvi hoped that the BNP-backed mayor candidate Taimiur Alam Khandaker would win the NCC election. “We are suspecting rigging in the NCC election, but at the same time we are also confident about people’s support,” he said.
Denouncing the attacks on BNP activists, he said recently the ruling party activists have attacked the supporters of BNP-backed candidates in Kaliakoir municipal election and the house of BNP leader Mesbahuddin in Barisal, and also beaten to death a Chhatra Dal worker in Chittagong University.
He alleged that the pro-government activists has also killed Khulna city BNP leader Modasser Hossain and attacked the BNP workers in different areas of Sylhet.
The BNP leader further alleged that police are patronizing Awami League terrorists on one hand and on the other, arresting the BNP men.
He cautioned that no government could stay in power in the past by terrorist activities like killing, kidnapping or attacking the opponents.
Rizvi said: “People didn’t allow any oppressive government to cling to power in the past and they will not tolerate any such government in the future.”
