
Dhaka, Dec 13 (UNB) - The just-concluded Bangladesh Apparel and Textile Exposition (Batexpo-2011), the country’s largest apparel show, bagged spot orders worth about US$ 66.35 million despite the global economic crisis, organisers said.
The amount is higher than that of the previous year when it got spot orders worth US$ 65 million.
Of the USS$ 66.35 million, US$ 64.77 million is of spot orders, while US$ 1.58 million of spot orders on stock lots.
The number of foreign buyers, buyers’ representatives and visitors was also higher this time, BGMEA president M Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin told reporters at a press conference at its conference room on Tuesday.
Briefing the journalists, the BGMEA president said if the RMG sector gets policy support and infrastructure development, its export will exceed US$ 30 billion in the next three years. “The demand for our products is increasing in the global market,” Mohiuddin said.
BGMEA first vice president Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, second vice president M Siddiqur Rahman, BGMEA directors and Chief Coordinator of the Batexpo-2011 and Well Group CEO Syed Nurul Islam were also present.
A total of 175 foreign buyers and 3015 buyers’ representatives from the USA, UK, Canada, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Germany, Australia, Spain, Russia, Poland, Egypt, the Netherlands, Turkey, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, France, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Greece, Thailand, Singapore, South Africa, Portugal, Korea, Arab Emirate, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Jordan, Uruguay and other countries visited the three-day event that ended on Monday.
Some 162 foreign buyers and 2870 buyers’ representatives visited the Batexpo last year.
A total of 15690 visitors visited the event this year while the number of visitors was 14,990 last year.
Among the buyers, buyers of Latin America, Japan and India specially expressed their interest about Bangladeshi products, Mohiuddin said.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the event at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on Saturday while opposition leader and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia attended the closing session of the three-day event as the chief guest on Monday.
The BGMEA upheld the goodwill earned by showcasing Bangladeshi products in different countries through fairs.
Three important seminars titled ‘Skill Development and employment in Bangladesh RMG Sector’, ‘Challenges of Meeting Compliance Issues while Exporting RMG’ and ‘Resource Efficiency and Environment Compliance Initiatives to Sustain Export Growth’ were held on the sidelines of the event each day.
MGH, SAASCO Group, GIZ, IFC Bank, Exim Bank, Southeast Bank, Airtel, NCC Bank, Shahjalal Islami Bank and Well Park Residence were among the sponsors of the event.
