Narayanganj, Dec 18 (UNB)-At least five people were injured in a clash between police and Swechchhasebak Dal activists when police obstructed a Dhaka bound motorcade of the party near Kanchpur bridge here Sunday morning.
Vehicular movement on Dhaka-Chittagong highway remained suspended for 15 minutes when the clash ensued at 10:45 am.
Songargaon thana Swechchhasebak Dal joint convenor Kamal Hossain said when several hundred activists in seven buses and minibuses were going to Dhaka to join a porgramme of BNP at Engineers’ Institute in the capital police obstructed four of their vehicles, triggering a clash.
Witnesses said when police stopped the motorcade the Swechchhasebak Dal activists got furious and locked into altercation with police.
At one stage, when the activists tried to put up barricade on the road police charged baton on them and in retaliation they threw brickbats towards the law enforcers.
A chase and counter-chase also took place and five workers were injured during the clash.
Among the injured-Nasir Ahmed and Sultan-were admitted to a local clinic.
