Dhaka, Dec 22 (UNB) - Opposition BNP on Thursday announced countrywide demonstration programmes for December 24 and 26 protesting the ‘government’s repressive measures against the opposition and police action’ on its Wednesday’s mass procession in the capital.

The demonstrations will be held at thana, upazila and municipality levels on December 24 while that of district headquarters on December 26.

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the programmes at a press conference at the party central office, protesting police obstruction to its Wednesday’s mass procession, arrest and filing of ‘false’ cases against the party leaders and workers, repression on the opposition, abductions and the recent spate of secret killings.

Describing the recent incidents of police action to obstruct the BNP’s programmes and the government’s repressive measures against it, Fakhrul hoped that a good sense will prevail upon the government and it will return from its repressive path. “Or else”, he warned, “The government will have to shoulder the responsibility if any confrontational incident or instability is created in the country.”

The BNP acting secretary general strongly protested the government repressive measures and police action on its Wednesday’s mass procession in the capital.

He said about 85 leaders and workers of BNP and its front and associate organisations were arrested over the mass procession since Wednesday morning.

He said they have allegations that ‘Awami League terrorists’ wearing police uniform obstructed the BNP leaders and workers in different areas of the city on Wednesday.

Fakhrul said the government did not impose any restriction or section 144 on Wednesday against the mass procession, but it obstructed the mass procession using their muscle power.

BNP leaders Amanullah Aman, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Nazimuddin Alam, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Nazrul Islam Manju, MP and Abdul Latif Jony were, among others, present at the press conference.
