Dhaka, Dec 31 (UNB) - The month-long 17th Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF)-2012 begins here on Sunday to showcase local products.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the fair at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city at 11am.
Organisers expect that the fair will help strengthen strong relations between consumers and producers; enable the foreign participants to know about comparative advantage of Bangladesh and encourage the entrepreneurs to produce new products.
Commerce Minister GM Quader, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce Ministry ABM Abul Quasem and FBCCI president AK Azad will attend the inaugural session as special guests.
The Ministry of Commerce and the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) will jointly arrange the event.
“We’re expecting an increased volume of spot orders and nearly one lakh visitors each day,” Commerce Minister GM Quader told reporters at a press conference at the fair venue on Saturday. Commerce Secretary M Ghulam Hossain was also present.
The DITF bagged spot orders worth Tk 25 crore in the outgoing year (2011) while Tk 22.86 crore in 2010.
“The entire venue will be brought under CCTV with 80 cameras to ensure foolproof security in and around it,” Quader said adding that it would be a centre of trade and entertainment together.
He said a total of 47 organisations representing 12 countries from - Asia, North America, Europe and Africa - are participating in the DITF this year.
The participating countries are Pakistan, India, China, Iran, South Korea, Thailand, the USA, Turkey, Singapore, Malaysia, the UAE and Morocco.
Among the participating countries North American country Morocco, for the first time, will participate in the mega trade event in Bangladesh.
Replying to a question, Ghulam Hossain said the ministries concerned are jointly working for a permanent fair venue at city’s Purbachal.
He said this time they have given priority to manufacturers and producers.
A special pavilion, ‘Bangabandhu and Bangladesh’, has been set up at the fair venue to uphold Bangladesh history and Bangabandhu.
A total of 506 stalls - pavilions (Bangabandhu Pavilion), premier pavilions, mini-pavilions, general stalls, restaurants and an amusement park - are there at the venue.
Machinery, carpet, cosmetics and beauty aids, electrical and electronics, jute goods, leather goods and footwear, sports good, sanitary wire, toys, stationary, jewelry, ceramics, furniture and handicrafts will be displayed at the fair.
The entry fee has been fixed at Tk 20 and Tk 10 for adults and children respectively.
