News - Poultry wastes can help generate 2000 megawatt electricity: Atiur
Cox’s Bazar, Jan 6 (UNB) - Bangladesh Bank governor Dr Atiur Rahman on Friday said Bangladesh could annually generate some 2000 megawatt of electricity from poultry waste.

“The total investment in the poultry sector now stands at around Tk 16000 crore. It’s possible to generate around 2000 megawatt of power from poultry waste,” he said while addressing a function at Hotel Ocean Paradise here.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Eastern Bank Limited jointly arranged the event, marking the inaugural ceremony of financial product 'NOBODOY' for renewable energy.

Referring to IFC data, the central bank governor said some 50 lakh people in the country are engaged in the poultry industry, the second largest source of rural employment.

“There’re 1,20,000 to 1,30,000 small and medium poultry farms in the sector. The creative product of Eastern Bank Limited - EBL NOBODOY - supported by IFC to generate electricity from poultry waste is a praiseworthy initiative,” he said.

Senior officials of EBL and IFC were present at the function.
