Dhaka, Jan 12 (UNB) – Jamaat-e-Islami activists set ablaze a police vehicle at Dainik Bangla intersection while demonstrating in the city in protest against the arrest of its former ameer Ghulam Azam on Thursday evening.

Police said a firearm of a patrol inspector was snatched by the demonstrators during the melee.

Witnesses said the Jamaat activists, numbering 250-300, suddenly brought a procession from Motijheel area and marched towards Fakirapol Water Tank via Dainik Bangla intersection at about 4:50 pm.

The Jamaat activists turned violent when a jeep of patrol inspector (PI) of Motijheel thana Abul Bashar reached the spot.

The demonstrators attacked the vehicle and assaulted PI Bashar, and at one stage set fire to the jeep in front of the Water Tank.

On information, additional police rushed in and swung into action charging batons and lobbing 5-7 teargas canisters to disperse the move.

Police picked up three people from the scene.
