Dhaka, Jan 24 (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Tuesday proposed joint tourism packages by Bangladesh and Nepal for the promotion of tourism sector in the two countries as well as in the region.

The proposal came when the newly appointed Nepalese Ambassador to Bangladesh Hari Kumar Shrestha called on the Prime Minister at her office.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting, PM’s press secretary Abul Kalam Azad said the Prime Minister told the Ambassador that Bangladesh attach maximum importance on cordial relations with all its neighbors including Nepal.

Laying emphasis on regional connectivity for the overall development of the region, Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh is ready to offer transit facilities to Nepalese goods through Chittagong and Mongla ports.

She mentioned the signing of a Standard Operating Procedure with India to allow Nepalese vehicles to enter up to 200 metres from zero point at Banglabandha inside Bangladesh territory.

The Prime Minister also put emphasis on more cooperation in hydro-electricity sector including joint implementation of Sapt-Koshi dam, which is expected to generate 3,500 MW of electricity.

The Nepalese Ambassador praised the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in various regional and international forums.

He also conveyed to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina the invitation of Nepalese Prime Minister to visit the country at her convenience.

Ambassador at-large M Ziauddin was present during the meeting.
