Sylhet, Feb 6 (UNB) - Islami Chhatra Shibir - the student wing of Jamaat - of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) called off their indefinite strike on Saturday night
The Shibir leaders of SUST unit announced the withdrawal of their strike after holding a meeting with the Vice Chancellor and the committee formed on January 18 to restore peaceful atmosphere on the campus.
When contacted Mozammel Haque, publicity secretary of SUST Shibir unit said they decided to withdraw the strike after the university administration assured them to fulfill their five-point demand in the meeting.
In reply to a query in this regard, Prof Dr M Anwarul Islam, convener of the committee said we have taken the responsibility of those Shibir leaders-activists who are not accused in the case.
They would be able to attend their classes and examination, he added.
On January 15, Chhatra Shibir, an associate body of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, enforced the indefinite strike to press home their three-point demand following a series of clashes with Bangladesh Chhatra League activists on the campus on January 11.
The clash took place following the arrest of former Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and war crimes suspect Ghulam Azam.
During the clashes, BCL activists attacked and vandalized the rooms of Shibir activists at Shah Paran Hall, prompting the Shibir men to launch a counter attack on the BCL men that left at least 30 people injured from both sides.
Later, on January 18 Shibir activists called indefinite strike to press home their five-point demand.
The Shibir activists have vandalized 11 university buses. Three students and a staff of the university were critically injured in their attack.
Police held some 42 Shibir activists from the campus and different places in the city in this connection.
Eight cases were filed against over three hundred Shibir men following the series of clashes and vandalism on the campus on January 11.
