Dhaka, Feb 6 (UNB) - BNP has formed `Citizen Investigation Committee’ to probe the killing of five activists of the party and Jamaat-e-Islami in Chandpur, Laxmipur and Rajshahi on January 29-30.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the five-member probe committee while addressing a press conference at the party central office on Monday afternoon.
Headed by Supreme Court Bar Association president Khandaker Mahbub
Hossain, the other members of the committee are Syed Abdal Ahmed, general secretary of National Press Club, Dr Abdul Mannan, ex pro-VC of BSMMU, Adv Hafizur Rahman MP, and Abu Taleb, former additional district judge.
Asked about the ruling party’s allegation that BNP was responsible for the killings, Fakhrul said: “They (ruling party) want to shift the blame to others by creating a smokescreen.”
Squarely blaming the government, he said BNP had expected the government will express sorrow and seek pardon for the killing of five opposition activists in police firing but it did not do so.
About the March 12 `Cholo Cholo Dhaka Cholo programme’, the BNP leader said the ministers and other ruling party leaders are “resorting to falsehood” apparently in their bid to foil the peaceful opposition programme.
An Awami League-supported body has also given counter-programm on the same day, he said.
