Dhaka, Feb 6 (UNB) - Although BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will accept renaming the caretaker government as interim government, but nothing short of the ‘character of the non-party, neutral caretaker government’.
‘’Even we will not accept an all-party interim cabinet,’’ BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan told UNB over phone Sunday night.
On Saturday, Khaleda had said if the Awami League has any allergy about the name of ‘caretaker government’, it could be renamed as “non-party, neutral interim government or by any other names’’ to oversee the next general elections.
She also offered discussion to form such “non-party, neutral interim government” to be constituted for three months.
The opposition leader gave the offer while addressing leaders and workers of Barguna BNP’s front organisations who came to meet her at her Gulshan office after obtaining bails from the higher court.
Nazrul Islam Khan, who was present in the meeting, said BNP has not changed its stance that any non-party interim government must also retain the original character of the “caretaker” government.’
Replying to a question, he said doors for discussion could be opened on how to constitute a “non-party, neutral interim government” once the present government declare that it will restore the caretaker system.
The BNP standing committee memberl said there were various options in the Constitution to form a caretaker government before the adoption of the 15th amendment that abrogated the system.
He said discussions could be held on how to improve those provisions and overcome any loopholes of the caretaker government.
A few weeks ago, Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam had said a solution to the issue of the caretaker government could be worked out by maintaining the 15th amendment and the High Court judgment. He, however, did not elaborate the point.
In reply to a question, Nazrul said they will not accept an all-party intermim cabinet to be formed with members of the present parliament ahead of the elections.
He said since Awami League has the majority in the parliament, the
President will invite them to form such interim cabinet.
Nazrul said even if the incumbent Prime Minister does not head such a cabinet, one among the Awami League MPs will be appointed as the
Prime Minister and they will continue to dominate such cabinet.
‘’So, it will remain a party government…we don’t want to change the original character of the non-party caretaker government,’’ he added.
