Dhaka, Feb 8 (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said in Parliament that the Awami League does not believe in the policy to appease India and asserted that unresolved issues with New Delhi would be resolved.
Accusing former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia of sacrificing Bangladesh’s national interests to India while in power, Hasina said Awami League does not forget or compromise on the national interests.
Replying to a supplementary of independent lawmaker Mohammad Fazlul Azim during the PM’s question hour, the Prime Minister launched a double-pronged attack on both Ershad-led Jatiya Party and Khaleda-led BNP for “failing to settle” the longstanding issues with India though they had been in power for a total of 29 years.
“In fact, they (Jatiya Party and BNP) believe in double standard -- with overt hatred against India but covert love in the deep of their hearts,’’ she said amid thumping of desk by the treasury bench members.
Earlier, replying to Shahiduzzaman Sarkar (Awami League-Naogaon), Hasina said the government has signed a protocol with India resolving the long-running issues of transfer of enclaves and adversely possessed lands, and demarcation of 6.5 kms boundary.
Besides, she said, it has also been possible to ensure 24-hour access of Bangladeshis to Dahagram and Angorpota enclaves through the Tin Bigha Corridor.
The Prime Minister told parliament that the government has also raised the maritime boundary disputes with Myanmar and India to ITLOS and international arbitration for settlement.
About the controversy of Tipaimukh dam, she said the government has urged India to include Bangladesh in the joint study on the Tipaimukh dam.
Negotiations also continue to share the water of the Teesta River, she added.
About connectivity with Nepal and Bhutan, Hasina said work on preparing a framework is at the final stage to allow Nepal and Bhutan the use of Mongla and Chittagong ports as well as export of transit goods to third country through Bangladesh.
About the cooperation with China, she said Beijing has declared a grant of 150 million Yuan for Bangladesh. Besides, negotiations also continue with China on the construction of deep seaport at Sonadia in Cox’s Bazar.
The Prime Minister said cooperation with Japan and Korea has intensified under the present government.
She claimed that due to the present government’s foreign policy, Bangladesh has emerged as a leading country of democracy, communal harmony and the rule of law.
