Jurno Couple Murder: IGP claims significant progress in probe
Dhaka, Feb 13 (UNB) - Police chief Hassan Mahmood Khandaker has claimed a significant progress in the investigation into journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi murder case, but did not disclose the findings.
The Inspector General of Police came up with the comment at a press briefing at the Police Headquarters on Monday afternoon.
The press conference was held on conclusion of a two-day quarterly conference on crimes.
Addressing the briefing, Hassan Mahmood said they will disclose findings of the investigation very soon.
Referring to a 48-hour deadline given by Home Minister Shahara Khatun, the IGP said hundred-percent progress cannot be achieved in some cases within a set time.
Shahara ordered the police and other law-enforcing agencies to arrest the killers within 48 hours when she had visited the residence of the slain journalists on Saturday morning.
On Sunday, Shahara also reaffirmed that the killers of the couple would be hunted down within the 48-hour timeframe.
Asked where there was any arrest in the double-murder case, the IGP said he cannot make further comment on the issue for the sake of investigation.
ATN Bangla senior reporter Meherun Runi and her husband Sagar Sarwar, news editor of Maasranga Television, were brutally killed early Saturday at their West Rajabazar residence. Their only son, Megh, 6, was asleep in another bedroom when the grisly incident occurred.
Nowsher Alam Roman, younger brother of Runi, filed a murder case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station in this connection on Sunday afternoon.
Five sub-inspectors were working together to unveil the mystery behind the grisly murder of the journalist couple.
About the conference, the IGP said overall law and order situation of the country was almost under control during the October-December period (2011).
District-level Superintendents of Police, DIGs, Commissioners of different metropolitan police and senior police officials attended the conference.
