Chandpur, Feb 13 (UNB) - Urging people to join her party’s March 12 Dhaka grand rally, opposition leader Khaleda Zia on Monday said the present government will be ousted through a pro-people programme to save the country and its people.
Addressing a public meeting at Chandpur Stadium, Khaleda asked the ruling party not to announce any counter-programme on March 12 and warned that it will have to shoulder the responsibility in case of any untoward situation.
Local BNP organised the meeting to protest the killing of two party activists -- Abul Hossain Mridha and Lemon Saiyal -- in ‘police fire’ in Chandpur on January 29.
Khaleda said their March 12 progarmme is, in fact, a rally and it will be peaceful.
On caretaker government system, Khaleda reiterated that if they (Awami League) do not like the word caretaker they can drop it.
“We’ll have no objection if the non-party neutral government is renamed in any other way.”
Khaleda renewed her warming that it (govt) would not be allowed to hold the next general election under a partisan government. “Election with Electronic Machine Voting (EVM) won’t be allowed either as it’s a faulty system.”
About the law and order situation, she said the government has failed to ensure the security of people even in their houses and the journalist couple killing in Dhaka early Saturday is the example. “But the government can’t capture the killers.”
The opposition leader alleged that some 12, 000 people were killed during the last three years of the present government.
The BNP chairperson also came down heavily on the government for killing her party activists during the mass procession in January last.
Describing the government as killer, the former premier said its hands got stained with blood.
Turning to border killings, the BNP chairperson said innocent Bangladeshi nationals are being frequently killed like birds along the border by Indian BSF, but the government cannot protest due to its subservient foreign policy.
Describing the economy as fragile, Khaleda said banks are on the verge of bankruptcy as the government is running the country borrowing huge loans from the banking sector.
“No industry, mill and factory have been built during the last three years of the Awami League regime though jobless rate in the country is on the rise,” she told the meeting.
Referring to the convulsing share market, the BNP chairperson said 33 lakh small investors have turned paupers by the time while 1.5 crore families have been hit hard due to the share market scam. “People are so fed-up that they want to get rid of this inefficient, corrupt government.”
On the Padma Bridge, she said the World Bank and other funding agencies have stopped releasing funds for the construction of Pmega project simply because of corruption.
Earlier, Khaleda Zia consoled the bereaved family members of late Abul Hossain Mridha and Lemon Saiyan at the meeting venue and handed over Tk one lakh to each of the families.
Chaired by over Chandpur district BNP president Mominul Huq, the protest meeting was addressed, among others, by BNP leaders Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, MK Anwar, Brig Gen (retd) Hannan Shah, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Harun-or-Rashid, Ehsanul Huq Milon, Asifa Ashrafi Papia, Sheikh Faird Ahmed and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders Prof Mojibur Rahman and Abdullah M Syed Taher.
