India sees 15% rise in sugar production in 2012

New Delhi, Feb 20 (Asianet/UNB) - Sugar production in India has gone up by about 15 per cent to 16.13 million tonnes so far this year as compared to last year. About 14 million tonnes of the sweetener were produced till February 15 in the sugar season 2010-11, Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said in a statement.

ISMA said sugar production will be 26 million tonnes in the 2011-12 season.

The number of sugar mills has increased this year. As against 502 mills that were operational in 2010-11, 524 mills were operational as on February 15, 2012.
