10,000 orphan street children ‘to get shelter’
Dhaka, Feb 27 (UNB) – Some 10,000 orphan street children will get shelter in Ahsania Mission Children City in phases, said president of Dhaka Ahsania Mission Kazi Rafiqul Alam on Monday.
“At present, there’re about 13 lakh street children across the country. Deprived of love and care, the future of these children is bleak,” he told a meeting.
South Asia Representative of Kinder Not Hilfe (KNH), a child rights-based donor agency of Germany, David Kowertz visited various projects to see the activities of Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM). KNH country representative Rumi Momtaz and Rafiqul Alam accompanied him.
Speaking on the occasion, the DAM president said if these children cannot be rehabilitated in society, they are unlikely to be able to lead a decent life.
He said the hapless children would be imparted job-oriented vocational training alongside ensuring their regular physical exercise, games and sports and cultural activities.
Rafiqul Alam said there will be facilities for rearing poultry birds, livestock, pisciculture and crop cultivation so that the children can be self-reliant.
He said the first children’s village would be set up at Jalapara in Panchagarh Sadar upazila. “There’ll be 10 such children villages.”
David Kowertz visited the multi-grade teaching-learning process of non-formal primary education of UNIQUE Project at Mirpur-14 and the Vocational Training Centre at Pallabi and the Drop-in-Centre of Mohammadpur in the capital.
