Dhaka, Mar 1 (UNB) - Declaring illegal the rampant cutting of hills and hillocks, the High Court on Thursday asked the government to take immediate steps to put an end to such acts.
Delivering the judgment upon a pending public interest litigation writ petition, an HC division bench comprising Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Justice Jahangir Hossain said the environmental impact assessment and environmental clearance certificate from the appropriate authorities are mandatory for cutting any hill in the country.
The HC also asked the government to abide by the prescribed rules.
In November last year, Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers’ Association (BELA) filed the PIL writ petition following recent newspaper reports on rampant hill cutting although the government restriction in this regard is in force.
Responding to the petition, the HC had issued rule upon the government asking for explanation on the issue and imposed a six-month ban on cutting hills and hillocks in six upazilas of Sylhet district.
Advocate Iqbal Kabir Liton appeared for BELA while deputy attorney general Yadia Zaman for the government.
