News - 3 brick kilns closed for violating rules
Bagerhat, Mar 2 (UNB) - A mobile court on Thursday afternoon shut down three brick kilns at Bagmara and Rahimabad villages in Sadar upazila on charges of violating rules.

The owners of the brick fields -- Sarwar Hossain, Sheikh Abdul Khaleque and Jummu Paik -- were also fined Tk 26,000 by the mobile court of the Department of Environment (DoE).

Of them, Sarwar was fined Tk 15,000, Khaleque Tk 1,000 and Jummu Tk 10,000.

The mobile court, led by executive magistrate Mehedi Hasan and aided by police, conducted a drive at the brick kilns and found those burning wood violating rules and polluting the environment, said Mehedi.

The mobile court instantly ordered closure of the brick kilns and slapped the fine.

Deputy Director of Bagerhat DoE M Osman Goni told UNB that many brick kilns here were making bricks by burning wood. “We’re conducting the drive to stop illegal brick burning. The drive will be conducted in other upazilas of the district gradually,” he added.

Mobile courts, led by Mehedi Hasan and another executive magistrate Moshiur Rahman, conducted drives at 16 brick kilns in different areas here from December 21 last year till March 1.

During the drives, the mobile courts sentenced eight people to different jail terms ranging from seven days to two months and realised about Tk 1.5 lakh in fine.

Cases were also filed against 12 brick kiln owners during the period.
