
Dhaka, Mar 18 (UNB) -The prosecution lawyers by turn started reading out the formal charges against accused Jamaat-e-Islami leader M Kamaruzzaman detained on charges of crimes against humanity.
The charge hearing against the Jamaat assistant secretary general, however, remained inconclusive. It will resume on Monday.
After examining the formal charges, probe reports and documents submitted by the prosecution, the tribunal on January 31 took cognisance of the charges of crimes against humanity allegedly perpetrated during the 1971 Liberation War by Kamaruzzaman.
The prosecution pressed charges against the Jamaat leader on nine counts of crimes against humanity, including conspiracy of genocide.
According to the charges, Kamaruzzaman, a leader ofAl Badr, a secret killing squad of Jamaat-e-Islami, in collaboration with Pakistan occupation army operated in Mymensingh, Netrakona, Jamalpur, Tangail and Sherpur areas during the Liberation War four decades ago.
Earlier, the accused had been produced in the dock amid tight security before the proceedings began.
