Dhaka, Mar 19 (UNB) - BNP will stage demonstrations across the country on Wednesday in protest against the charge framing against party senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman in connection with the August 21 grenade attack.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a press conference at the party's central office announced the demonstration programme, terming the case ‘fabricated and false’.
In the capital, he said, the demonstration will be held in front of the BNP central office at Nayapaltan.
A Dhaka court on Sunday framed charges against BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman and 28 others in connection with the August 21 grenade attack on Awami League rally in the city in 2004.
Fakhrul said Tarique was implicated in the charge sheet as part of a blueprint to keep him away from politics.
Describing the charge sheet as ‘false and fabricated’, he said it was framed in absence of Tarique and without giving him any scope for self-defence.
The BNP leader said Tarique’s name was not there in first charge sheet and no witness had either mentioned his name in connection with the grenade attack.
He said Mufti Hannan was forced to mention Tarique’s name in his confessional statement, which he later retracted.
Fakhrul said Tarique name was included in the charge sheet by Abdul Kahar Akond as part of a conspiracy after supplementary investigation into the case.
He strongly protested and condemned the charge framing against Tarique and demanded withdrawal of the false case against him.
